Another CD 12 Candidate Matt Adams Leverages His Campaign to Demand No to US War on Iran, Joins Peace Block Candidates!
The President’s power to use military force is constrained to situations where the United States is under an imminent threat or where Congress has specifically authorized military action. Iran posed no such threat, not even close. And even by the President’s own words, the United States had already “obliterated” any such threat months before.
As a Veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, I have seen firsthand how lies about “WMDs” were used to justify war. The exact same lies are being told now, and we must take them for what they are: lies.
The President has put the lives and livelihoods of countless service members in jeopardy by forcing them into impossible “law of armed conflict” decisions that may ultimately carry legal and moral consequences. “I was just following orders” has never been an absolute defense to violations of international humanitarian law. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has created extraordinary presidential immunity protections that leave many service members bearing the real burden and risk of these decisions. Once again, political leaders make reckless choices while those in uniform are left to carry the consequences.
In terms of the war in Gaza, I believe we should follow the evidence and assessments of credible international human rights observers rather than rush to definitive conclusions for political convenience. According to Ajith Sunghay, head of the UN Human Rights Office in the occupied Palestinian territory, “the totality of Israeli conduct in Gaza raises serious concern about Israel’s compliance with its obligation to prevent acts within the scope of the Genocide Convention.” If respected international legal and human rights authorities are raising these concerns, the United States should not dismiss them out of hand.
The humanitarian suffering in Gaza has been devastating. Innocent civilians should never bear the cost of terrorism, political failure, collective punishment, or endless war. America must return to constitutional accountability, diplomacy, and a foreign policy that values human life over perpetual conflict.
