Historical NJ Blockade Shut US 3rd Largest Port (Port Newark / Elizabeth) to Block US War Shipments to Israel! BRAVO! Let the Resistance in NJ and Elsewhere Grow!
BREAKING: on 22 May, 30+ activists shut down the entrance to the 3rd largest port in the US to prevent a shipment of ammunition and weapons components to be loaded aboard the Israel-bound vessel ZIM Asia. The activists also called for the eviction of the Israeli shipping company Zim Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM) and Danish competitor, Maersk—the two primary shipping-logistics companies responsible for transporting U.S.-manufactured weapons components to israel. Actionists blockaded the road using an R.V. and a truck with a boat hitched to its carriage, fastening themselves to the vehicles and to one another using “sleeping dragon”-style PVC devices. It took police over 3 hours to clear the scene. 10 people were arrested.
Today’s action at Port Newark-Elizabeth comes one day after a picket was held at the facility, seeking to disrupt a separate ammunition and weapons shipment to Israel by the vessel ZIM Virginia, organized by Port Workers and Communities for Palestine.
The people demand: Stop Arming Israel Now
The actionists demanded that @theportauthority_ny_nj evict ZIM and Maersk from Port Newark-Elizabeth, stating that they “are taking it upon [themselves] to obstruct this illegal cargo” and call upon “all people of conscience and the union workers of the International Longshoreman’s Association to block the boats and to cease loading arms shipments on to ZIM and Maersk vessels.”
A November 2025 report by the @palestinianyouthmovement and @progintl_en found that “the vast majority of all U.S. military sea cargo sold to the Israeli Ministry of Defense (IMOD) passes through a single warehouse in Jersey City… Owned by Interglobal Forwarding Services (IFS), this facility handles over 1,000 tons of IDF-bound military cargo every week,” which it transfers to the Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal complex for transport aboard ZIM and Maersk vessels.
History has proven that efforts like these are winnable through sustained pressure and collective action. ZIM was driven out of Oakland in 2014 by AROC-organized protests and ILWU Local 10’s refusal to cross their picket lines. When they came back seven years later, they were turned away again.
Fom Oakland to NJ, and across the world, people are building on this history by organizing campaigns and actions to end the complicity of their ports and cities in the Genocide of the Palestinian people an the merciless bombing of Iran and Lebanon.
