There was a day, long ago, when Americans could defend unconditional support for Israel. It was David fighting Goliath, a democracy struggling to survive against long odds, while offering credible peace plans designed to pave the way for a Palestinian state.

But the war in Gaza has shown us a new Israel, a grotesque perversion of the original, now a Goliath itself, stomping on weaker Palestinians, cutting off food and medicine as it pounds one neighborhood after another into dust. All while expanding settlements on the West Bank and vowing to forever suffocate Palestinian hopes for their own state.

Children in Gaza are starving to death, a few miles from crowded dinner tables in Israel. In the handful of hospitals left standing in Gaza, doctors are operating without anesthesia in many cases. More than 80 percent of Gazans are homeless, running for their lives, waiting in fear of the next offensive. Anarchy reigns, with no plan to end it.

This can’t be justified, and it can’t be called self-defense. This is savagery, and it’s time for America to draw the line, to call unequivocally for a cease-fire in the United Nations, and to begin cutting offensive arms, and attaching conditions on their use. Israel is making itself a global pariah, with our weapons, making us complicit in all this.
