HR 9495 On Floor Again Nov 18 – This Time Simple Majority Needed – Easier to Succeed!
As FightBackBetter readers know, congress rejected a fast-tracked attempt of HR 9495 that required 2/3 majority to be successful. 3 NJ Democrats voted for it and across the country 52 Democrats voted for it. The fact that such a large portion of US Democrats voted FOR this bill exposes the false narrative that voting for Democrats is the way to oppose fascism. Indeed Democrats can always be counted on to aid fascism when it inviolves furthering the US – Israel genocide and the slaughter of Palestinians.
This time it is not a fast track vote so a simple majority is all that will be needed to pass. The vote last time was 256-144 – shy of the 2/3 needed but enough to pass under the terms of the November 18 vote. CAIR – NJ has raised the alert on this issue stating on Instagram:
The nonprofit killer bill that failed in the House of Representatives this week will be back on the House floor again on Monday, Nov. 18, and is slated for a vote on Wednesday, Nov. 20.
This time around, the bill requires a simple majority vote to pass. We need your help to stop this dangerous legislation from advancing to the Senate.

Why the bill is problematic:
Excessive Power and Lack of Oversight: The bill grants the Treasury Secretary sweeping authority to target and revoke nonprofit tax-exempt status based on vague or secretive information, threatening due process and transparency.
Chilling Effect on Advocacy: Organizations may hesitate to engage in legitimate advocacy or provide essential services due to the fear of losing their tax-exempt status.
Impact on Vulnerable Communities: The bill risks destabilizing vital support networks for marginalized communities, particularly those who rely on nonprofits for advocacy and resources. – CAIR-NJ on Instagram
