5/2 Rutgers Interim Agreement – Encampment Dismantling – Partial Victory – Details Forthcoming
This editor answered the below call at my Alma Mater and joined the potential stand off for about 3 hours. I did my own impromptu “Dancement at the Encampment” – a combination dance – slow jog around the outside of the perimeter often slowing down around the facing police presence. They mostly stayed afar but they did mingle a little. Symbolically I was in a forward position – symbolizing willingness to put my body in front of the children. Politically and legally the protesters are adults but us old heads will always think of our younger ones as our children and I believe we in this nation need to adopt the campus activists as our collective children and take collective responsibility for their protection. The AAUP and other unions provided a protective perimeter as well as reflective vested marshals of the students – some of whom were also likely union members.
There was a small group of pro-Israel counter protesters that gathered and taunted a little. But they were as far as I witnessed peaceable. There was one person who was a parent who tried to get a rise out of me about my age. I told him I was not interested in a conversation and he ranted that I should “get off the campus.” I walked away from him.
At around 4pm it was revealed that an interim settlement was reached between the students and administration. The details shall be spelled out and we hope to get the information as soon as is available. It was a prudent call – and the struggle continues. We can build on top of the gains and continue to push the demands in the months and years ahead.
