The following is a review of LD 1 – 8 NJ Assembly races for now focusing on the primaries and considering options for the general elections. The analysis will go further and we hope to engage with voters in these LD’s who can help with the strategies to defeat attempts to codify fascist IHRA laws in NJ. Please enter your information on the form below if you are interested in candidacy or in working togehter with the LD teams to motivate a favorable outcome: the defeat of IHRA in NJ!

NJ LD 1

LD 1 had a staunch Republican win by over 11K votes in 2023. Whoever captures the nomination will have an uphill battle. The June 10 Democratic Primary features the bracketed Fulop slate candidates Brandon Saffold and Carolyn Rush. They both have staked out a clear position opposing IHRA. There is a lone challenger, Carol Sabo whose position at this time is unknown so the assumption then is they are indifferent or in favor of IHRA. The bracketed candidates have an advantage as long as their voters stick together. The recommendation for IHRA opponents in LD 1 who are participating in the Democratic Primary is to reach out to the Saffold / Rush effort for more information. It is also recommended that LD1 voters reach out to Carol Sabo to inquiry about her IHRA view.

NJ LD 2

Republicans represent LD2 currently and one is on the bill. There is a primary show down between two Fulop allied candidates vs. two regular Democrat candidates. At this point in time Fightbackbetter is unaware of the positions of any of them. We will continue to reach out to all four and urge LD2 voters to directly challenge the four candidates to announce their positions. If we are unable to determine favorable IHRA candidates Democratic Party candidates – we can possibly impact the IHRA outcome in LD2 by running independent candidates – the decision has to be made very quickly. Use this form if you have interest in candidacy or pressuring for a good IHRA result in LD2.

NJ LD 3

LD 3 is a nail biter with the Democrats having flipped it in 2023 by a close margin of 1215. There is no contest in the primary – just two Democratic Party candidates who are incumbents. They are not on the fascist IHRA bill though it is not known if they have voiced opposition. There is a Green Party candidate opposing IHRA which could make it difficult for the Democratic Party candidates to maintain their current apparent silence on the issue. LD 3 voters are advised to reach out to Dave Bailey and Heather Simmons and call upon them to reveal their IHRA positions – hopefully opposed and to use that information in determining how or whether to participate in the primary. Voters are advised to connect with Al Rabady for more information on working to stop IHRA in LD 3.

NJ LD4

LD4 Assembly seats are possibly in play in 2025 given the close call of 2023 by 3K plus margin to the Dems, incumbents Hutchison and Miller who both sit as co-sponsors of the fascist bill. A bright spot is that one of the Fulop connected challengers Brian Everett has recently tweeted that he is opposed to IHRA. LD4 voters are urged to contact candidate Everett for more information. Additionally it is advised to reach out to Vonetta Hawkins to see if she too can make opposition known. This would be a good test case of power for this fight if opponents of IHRA can help bring this change to LD4 on June 10. But clear positioning by both Fulop candidates would be the blueprint for that. Of course voters should continue to maintain the steady pressure on Hutchison and Miller to get their names removed from the bill. It is a close enough race that having independents in the race, should the pro-IHRA incumbents prevail ni the primary could be a factor and this editor suggests the strategy can help. NJ LD 5

There is no nomination challenge in LD 5: Both incumbent Democrats are co-sponsors of the IHRA bill and running unopposed in the June 10 primary. Advice to LD5 voters in regard to the primary is to let the candidates know now if you are lacking enthusiasm given their support for our repression and maybe that you would be committed to their re-election if they were committed to your constitutional rights.. In the 2023 elections for Assembly in LD 5 the Democrats had a margin over 14K so it is not likely that there will be an overturning of this LD. A bright spot is Robin Brownfield, a staunch opponent of IHRA is in the race representing the Green Party. It is advised that LD5 voters reach out to candidate Brownfield for more information.

NJ LD 6

There is a Democratic Party primary contest. Incumbent Lousi Greenwald is on the bill and he was also a lead sponsor of the bill that increased the petition requirements to run for office so he is not a big fan of free speech or democracy. His partner Melida Kane as a Camden County commissioner spearheaded the adoptoin of the fraudulent IHRA false definition of antisemitism for Camden County. Hopefully the Fulop supported candidates Becky Holloway and Kevin Ryan can articulate opposition to IHRA. Voters of LD 6 are advised to connect with candidates Holloway and Ryan to seek common ground. An independent candidact in this LD would not be overly effective because of the wide margine the Democrats held in the 2023 elections, a margin of over 19K.

NJ LD 7

LD7 is not likely in play vs. the Republicans in 2025, the 2023 margin was 15K plus. There is a lone Fulop slate challenger – a disadvantage to the bracketed regular candidates who are also incumbents. Carol Murphy is a co-sponsor of the fascist IHRA Assembly bill. Balvir Singh was brought to the seat through a replacement process recently. The good news for LD 7 is Lisa Ryan’s challenge – not in the primary but in the general election. She already played a major role in the 2025 election cycle – putting Steven Fulop on the record as being opposed to IHRA (after he was for it and before he flopped again to be for it again unfortunately). Even though Fulop is now saying he would NOT veto IHRA – the work of LIsa in putting his alternate position on the record elevated the IHRA debate to the gubernatorial level and her work was documented here at FightBackBetter which broke the story, With LIsa Ryan’s talent, it is hopefully she can help sort where Bahvir SIngh and Eric Holliday stands on the issue and in the meantime it is highly recommended that voters connect with Lisa Ryan.
