Will there be a U.S. war against Latin America?

Every day, it seems, there is a new escalation between Donald Trump of the U.S. and Gustavo Petro of Colombia. For a few weeks, since the UN meeting in New York, it seemed only to be a war of words, but now that all seems to be changing.

Already 6 boats on their way to or from Venezuela, in international waters, have been bombed by the US, who each time claims that the boats held “narcotraffickers” and that was the US motivation to strike the boats. Trouble is that no evidence was ever produced, not the first, second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth time, and these attacks by the US are illegal under international law.

But that doesn’t stop Trump from his name-calling and his threatening to cut off all US aid to Colombia due to Petro’s alleged inability to stop drug trafficking. If one looks at the history of Colombia, though, one will find that this problem existed before Petro and will likely persist after his term is over in August 2026.

As with many of Trump and Rubio’s pronouncements, though, they show virtually no understanding of the situation in Colombia or in Venezuela, and their unfounded threats could have dire consequences. People living in Colombia are already expressing anger at the situation in the Caribbean and the deaths on boats, including one Colombian man a couple days ago. Petro has repeatedly said that the people on the boats are not narco-traffickers but young men who are poor and are in search of work.

It doesn’t take too much to see that since the end of September, Trump has been angry at Petro because Petro has been critical of the US-Israeli genocide of the Palestinians since the very beginning and, of late, has been pushing for the Unity through Peace plan that could be initiated after a 3/4 vote of the UN General Assembly. Petro spoke out loudly about how it would be a better option for the UN to end the genocide through the General Assembly instead of the UN Security Council. After 6 vetoes by the US blocking the passage of a ceasefire resolution through the UN Security Council, Petro and other members of BRICS and the Hague Group reasoned that it would make more sense to go to the General Assembly and bypass the power of a permanent member veto, with a Peace Through Unity Resolution.

In fact, this writer and two other members of the Green Party of New Jersey, including Lily Benavides, our write-in candidate for governor and Barry Bendar, Elections Chair, heard all of Petro’s speech, just before he was whisked away to the airport because Trump had revoked his visa. Trump couldn’t tolerate Petro’s clear analysis of the US-Israeli genocide and wanted to prevent him from continuing to espouse his point of view, something that Trump is doing all the time, especially, but not only, in regard to opponents of the genocide.

In New Jersey, the No Complicity NJ Committee was formed on Sunday night, October 19th, with the express purpose of bringing more attention to the illegal National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 (NSPM7) that attempts to illegally define First Amendment thoughts, philosophy, speech, other expressions and activity as “domestic terrorism”. NSPM7 details a plan for the Department of Justice to create a secret list of groups and individuals whose opinion on 10 topics falsely, per MAGA narrative, define us as domestic terrorists. Requests for data which would likely include social media data, police surveillance of political activity (for safety or other reasons), other information that police routinely monitor (for crime or safety reasons) to be turned over to the Department of Justice to analyze for free speech activity that Trump incorrectly equates to “domestic terrorist”.

US AG Bondi has stated that these are the same means being deployed against “cartel terrorism.” The cartel terrorism response is based upon another illegal presidential order with a secret terrorist list that the US is acting upon – including attacking shipping boats and now authorizing covert operations to murder Venezuelan President Maduro. For Bondi to suggest similar operations toward domestic law-abiding citizens and residents, people who live in the United States, based upon monitoring what should be our protected free speech and thoughts and ideas – is alarming to the organizers of this new committee.

As a matter of fact, the news about labeling Colombian President Gustavo Petro as the chief narco terrorist who has done nothing to stop narco trafficking was received just before this initial meeting, making people even more scared of what the Trump administration is doing.

The initial goal is to pressure US Attorney General Platkin, Governor Murphy and Democratic Party candidate Mikie Sherrill to work together to immediately draft and send a directive to NJ police departments and agencies at every level forbidding their participation is answering requests or demands from Department of Justice for participation in preparing information for or assisting in any way the illegal and what the group considers fascist NSPM7.
