Over the weekend, grassroots movements across New Jersey took to the streets to advocate for Palestinian rights. Saturday: South Jersey for Gaza Protest

On Saturday, South Jersey for Gaza hosted its weekly protest from 12-2 PM at the busy intersection near Krispy Kreme in Cherry Hill. Participants gathered to raise awareness about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and demand action from local and national leaders in support of Palestinian rights.

Sunday: Trenton Democratic Socialists of America Rally

In Trenton, the Democratic Socialists of America organized a rally across from the Trenton Farmer’s Market from 12-2 PM on Sunday. This event was part of their continuous efforts to push for policies that prioritize social justice, focusing on Palestinian liberation and human rights.

South Orange and Maplewood for Palestine: Rally and MLK Day Movement

SOMA for Palestine also held a rally on Sunday from 2-3 PM at Ricalton Square in South Orange. In addition, the group took part in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day tribute by placing luminaries outside homes across the South Orange and Maplewood area, honoring King’s commitment to peace, justice, and equality and calling for Palestinian liberation.

Leonia for Peace Action Rally

Later in the day, Leonia for Peace Action hosted a rally in the center of Leonia from 4-4:30 PM. This rally continued the call for justice and an end to violence, focusing on raising awareness about the plight of the Palestinian people and advocating for peace.

Monday: SOMA for Palestine’s “Mondays with Mikey” Protest

On Monday, SOMA for Palestine held its “Mondays with Mikey” protest outside Congresswoman Mikey Sherill’s office, demanding her support for an arms embargo on Israel. The protest was part of their ongoing advocacy for a peaceful and just resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, calling on elected officials to take a stand for Palestinian rights.

One-Time Events

Palestinian Cultural Festival in Jersey City

Sunday also saw the celebration of Palestinian culture and advocacy at the Palestinian Cultural Festival in Jersey City. This one-time event featured entertainment, art, and community-driven fundraising efforts to support Palestinian charities. Additionally, attendees could support Palestinian-owned businesses with tables showcasing local artisans and entrepreneurs.

Highlights from the festival included a 2:30 PM performance by Gad, a 12-year-old Palestinian refugee playing the Oud. At 3:00 PM, the Palestinian American Community Center (PACC) hosted a Tatreez Workshop, teaching attendees about traditional Palestinian embroidery. At 4:00 PM, the all-women’s Dabka team Banat Al-Awda performed and led a workshop, offering an energetic display of Palestinian dance and cultural pride.
