Stop Dangerous NESE Project Immediately
Editor’s Note: Fightbackbetter has kept a micro-focus on NJ solidarity wih Palestine since January 2024 and that has recently expanded to cover the ICE and other police and military terror threats to NJ. We are amplifying this call to protect the environment and health of NJ – we are not expanding to try to cover everything – we have not mastered even the very first part of the microfocus – Palestine. But for now please engage this important fight!

NESE is BACK
Help Stop this Dangerous Project
Williams -Transco has reapplied for the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) Project which proposes:
- Construction of a gas-powered compressor station (the most polluting type) in Franklin Township near an active quarry and close to 2000 homes
- 3.5 miles of connecting pipeline through Old Bridge
- 23 miles of new pipeline under the Raritan Bay/New York Harbor
Impacts:
The construction of the proposed compressor station will create air pollution and water pollution by releasing toxic chemicals.
The gases and toxins emitted by compressor stations increase the risks of asthma, cardiovascular, neurological, developmental, and respiratory diseases, and cancers. Small particulate matter, which comes from burning fossil fuels and forest fires, can combine with other toxins like carcinogens and bring them deep inside the body.
The higher pressure and speed of the gas coming from compressor stations increases the risk of leaks, fires & explosions. Chemicals in fracked gas corrode pipelines much faster than expected.
A pipeline under the Raritan Bay/New York Bay will dredge up toxins buried for decades and cause pollution. Inland and coastal risks include increased flooding and destruction of critical wetlands and habitats.
Pipelines leak enormous amounts of methane, a stronger greenhouse gas (GHG) than CO2, which directly contributes to climate change.
Unnecessary, not needed and of no benefit to New Jersey: This project is not in the public interest for residents of New Jersey. Communities in New Jersey will suffer the adverse effects of pipeline leakage, air and water pollution, flooding and other climate disasters, while none of this gas is for New Jersey.
