Perth Amboy Demand for Cease Fire Resolution Refused by City Council

We regret to inform you that Perth Amboy City Council has refused to pass the Ceasefire Resolution R-247-6/24 and an amended resolution that removed all “divisive” and “one-sided” language. In addition, Mayor Caba has refused to issue a public statement in support of a Ceasefire Resolution despite Perth Amboy residents’ tax dollars funding the genocide in Palestine.

Over 100 cities across the country have passed Ceasefire Resolutions, and Perth Amboy City has failed to join the growing list of communities. Despite attending city council meetings regularly for over 10 weeks, launching a petition in support of the Ceasefire resolution with 265+ signatures, and beginning an email campaign supporting the resolution, Perth  Amboy leadership has not created meaningful change.

We appreciate the efforts from Councilman Torres for supporting the Ceasefire Resolution throughout this process and Councilwoman Cruz for co-sponsoring it. We strongly oppose the “Moving Perth Amboy Forward” Campaign, as Mayor Caba and his team, which includes Council Members and administrators that have refused to listen to the voices of Perth Amboy residents calling for a Permanent Ceasefire. Even after 180,000 deaths that could be attributable to the US-led genocide in Gaza facilitated with our tax dollars.

We understand this is devastating news, especially for our Perth Amboy community that has a large number of BIPOC residents who know all too well that all oppression everywhere is interconnected.

Together, we must work towards a future where every community can thrive without fear of displacement or oppression. We urge you to vote for Ceasefire candidates, hold our elected officials accountable, and protest against injustice. We must never normalize genocide, whether it occurs in Congo, Sudan, Kashmir, or Palestine.

Furthermore, we will continue to support pro-Palestine events across New Jersey. It is vital to stand in solidarity with those facing oppression and to amplify the voices calling for justice and peace.
