A Mother’s Plea: Protect NJ’s LGBTQ communities from National Security Presidential Memorandum 7

Editor’s Note: The National Security Presidentlal Memorandum 7 (NSPM7) specifically smears a category of protected First Amendment speech and thought, the idea that an individual is “extremist on gender,” as a cause to falsely label someone as a “domestic terrorist .”  Such labeling can lead to discrimination in criminal charging and penalties by police and a wide range of harms up to and including police and military attacks.  This mother offers some insightful commentary about the need to protect NJ’s LGBTQ from NSPM7. Her identity is protected at her request. Please be encouraged to offer further testimony on this or related topics regarding NSPM7 using this form. – FightBackBetter Editor Bob Witanek

As the loving mother of an adult daughter in the transgender community, I am deeply concerned about the newest developments seeking to label anyone on a government watchlist as persons of concern with absolutely no basis in reality.

The transgender and larger LGBTQ community are American citizens who are constitutionally protected from government overreach just like any other citizen.

The fact that a person who is born with a brain that developed with a gender-identity different than their biological sex is not a reason to label someone as a bad actor. On the contrary, these people are just trying desperately to keep their lives together as best they can in the wake of the relentless and merit-less attacks by the current administration. Our children are beautiful, caring souls (often on the neurodivergent scale) who never chose this path nor were groomed to. Trust me when I say, no mother, no matter how much they support their child’s gender identity, would groom their child into an identity that places them in exponentially greater risk of harm and marginalization than the rest of society.

I encourage anyone who sees our beloved children as threats or frauds, to read all of the research on the biological reasons a person is born transgender. Then, I’d ask you to ponder why our kids, instead of receiving the support that other children and adults with brains that developed in a way not identical to those vilifying my daughter’s community, are demonized instead of left in peace to follow the “treatments” as put forth by multiple world-renowned and respected medical organizations.

All of this leads me to the heart of this gathering: why, once again, those in power in our state who claimed to be allies and ran elections based on this assertion, are once again turning their backs on us and not fighting this abhorrent and illegal labeling of the LGBTQ + community and its right to exist in peace and not be labeled an existential threat to our nation.

Complicity is as harmful and morally-bankrupt as the actions of the perpetrators of this policy.

I’ll remind our Democrats that even though the trans community is small, it has mothers, fathers, siblings, Aunts, Uncles, friends, etc who vote. And, because of the backstabbing we’ve received by our Dems of late, we often vote exclusively on a politician’s record of how our children are protected by them.

History will not be kind to any person in power who harms our most vulnerable. Please stand against this evil. Please stand on the  side of human rights for all.

I join the call upon NJ’s incoming administration to protect our communities from the severe potential of NSPM7 harm
