New Jerseyans Say No to a Renewal of the Gaza War

On January 19, 2025, we all breathed a sigh of relief as a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas went into effect, bringing a pause to a horrific war that had killed tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians. The ceasefire also offered the prospect of freedom for Israelis unjustly taken hostage and the thousands of Palestinians imprisoned without charge.

Alas, Israel, backed by the Trump administration, seems determined to scuttle the ceasefire and resume the Gaza carnage.

The ceasefire agreement had obligated Israel to immediately allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. But Israel has now cut off humanitarian supplies—food, shelter, and medicines—as well as electricity, violating the agreement and in any event a war crime since withholding necessities from a civilian population is never permissible.

The agreement also provided that talks would begin no later than day 16 to work toward the full withdrawal of Israeli troops and a permanent ceasefire. Israel, however, refused to engage in those talks until day 42, and then only to advance, along with the Trump administration, new terms rejecting the agreed goal of a permanent ceasefire.

The United States government, as one of the guarantors of the agreement, has done nothing to press Israel to meet its obligations. On the contrary, Trump has outrageously called for the expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza, shipped $12 billion in weaponry to the Israeli military, bypassing Congress, and threatened “the People of Gaza” that if the hostages are not released without a ceasefire, “you are DEAD!”

Tragically, on March 17, as this statement was being prepared for print, the Israeli militarywith a green light from the Trump administrationlaunched major surprise air attacks on Gaza, killing hundreds. Unless mediators can restore calm, it seems that the ceasefire is over, with horrendous human consequences for the Palestinian people. And the families of the Israeli hostages have declared that their government “has chosen to give up on the hostages.”

We call on the Israeli government to immediately and completely comply with the terms of the ceasefire agreement, restore humanitarian shipments to Gaza, and engage in good-faith negotiations for a permanent ceasefire.

We call on the U.S. government to stop abetting Israeli intransigence and breaking of the ceasefire agreement and uphold its responsibility to promote a permanent ceasefire as a step on the way to a long term just peace.
