Outrage as Jersey City Plans to Raise Israeli Flag Amid Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Protest and Die-In to be Held at Jersey City Hall, Wednesday, April 30
Jersey City, NJ — April 28, 2025 — Outraged residents and human rights advocates will gather at Jersey City Hall on Wednesday, April 30, to protest and hold a die-in against the planned Israeli flag raising ceremony sponsored by Mayor Steven Fulop, and the Jersey City Council. Steven Fulop is currently a candidate for New Jersey governor. The event, which is intended to celebrate “77 years of Independence,” is seen by many as a blatant disregard for the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza and the West Bank.
Organizers condemn the city’s decision to honor a state whose government has:
- Ethnically cleansed Palestinians from their land over the past 77 years.
- Perpetrated what the International Criminal Court (ICC) has deemed a plausible genocide against Gaza’s population for the past 18 months, killing over 50,000 people — including 20,000 children.
- Killed family members of Jersey City residents, leaving a local and personal impact.
- Orphaned 39,000 children and caused 4,000 child amputees.
- Assassinated 206 journalists and 406 aid workers, targeting those documenting and alleviating the suffering.
- Bombed all hospitals and healthcare facilities, killing over 1,000 doctors and healthcare workers, effectively collapsing the healthcare system.
- Destroyed schools, refugee camps, water treatment facilities, and cut off access to food, water, electricity, and fuel, pushing Gaza’s 2 million residents into an unlivable humanitarian disaster.
- Blocked essential humanitarian aid, including food, water, and medical supplies.
- Defied international law, ignoring rulings from both the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding the illegality of the occupation and the arrest warrants issued for Israeli leaders on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
“We cannot separate the Israeli flag from the actions of the Israeli government’s systematic assault on Gaza and the West Bank,” say organizers. “This flag raising is an abomination — an insult to those who believe in human rights, justice, and the sanctity of human life.”
The protest and die-in will serve as a somber memorial to the tens of thousands of lives lost and as a public demand that Jersey City officials not use public spaces to celebrate a government actively committing atrocities.
