Seth Kaper-Dale: Gov. Murphy Response to ICE Terror Raid in Edison Lacking . . . “handing the keys to Ciatterelli”
Commentary by Seth Kaper-Dale whose livestream of an ICE raid at an Edison, NJ business on Facebook helped initiate wide coverage of the ICE terror.
The governmental violence that was carried out at the Alba Wine and Spirits Warehouse raid started on Tuesday morning, July 8th, in the event itself, but the result of that violence will be made manifest in the days, weeks, months to come.
Every family, now, is scrambling. Scrambling to find lawyers. Scrambling to find money for lawyers. Scrambling to find money for rent. Scrambling to protect their children. Scrambling to make decisions about the future.
The great crime committed, that led to this scramble?
People went to work on a Tuesday morning.
We must quickly come to see this. The invasion in our country, like the invasion on January 6th, is a home-grown invasion.
Immigrants are not the problem. Immigrants and refugees are a blessing, not a burden. Immigrants and refugees come here as a result of the word’s abuses and brokenness (a lot of which is caused, by us) and find their way into society here, bringing beauty and newness, appreciation and vision.
The problem in this country is the Empire-like power of the United States, and the Militarism, Racism and unfettered Capitalism that fuels it.
For anyone who saw Governor Murphy’s sad response to the Alba Warehouse Raid you can see how bad things are. This governor, who proudly touted ‘Sanctuary State’ status for immigrants, and who has done a lot right by immigrants during his 7+ years in office, is tongue-tied and incapable of even a word of proper concern or compassion in the face of Trump’s government. His response tells us a lot about the direction of the next gubernatorial election and what the ‘handlers’ are saying about how democrats should ‘behave’ as we come up to November.
What the Governor should have said was, “I am deeply disturbed to hear about the violent and horrific way that the federal government stormed in and took hard working NJ residents away from Alba Warehouse. I promise to these families that I am committed to seeking legal support and material support to help you through this trauma. I call on my Administration to make sure we are preparing businesses to be ready for further actions, so that they know the rights of their work places and their workers. NJ is a state that is made up of people from all over the world, people who arrived here in a great variety of ways. And yes, there are many here, as in all states, who have a complicated status. This is due, firstly, to the failures of the US government to have consistent plans and policies around immigration. Our country has, consistently, opened and closed doors based on our economic needs, often hurting workers and families when the tide in economics or politics turns. And this is wrong.”
Unless Dems show a spine on this matter you might as well hand the keys to Jack Ciatterelli already.
peace, seth
