Lisa Davis Warns of Dangers of Self Incrimination of Sherrill’s ICE Portal Idea
NJ is reeling from the NJ Democratic Party blow out where outgoing Governor Murphy vetoed two of the Immigration Trust Act (ITA) bills that would have codified the prohibition of NJ police involvement in civil immigration federal law enforcement. On the heels of this fiasco, Governor Sherrill is scrambling to provide the perception that she is protecting when her party fail with ITA is a tacit invitation to Trump to invade New Jersey. One of her ideas is a video submit portal that would supposedly allow us to submit videos of ICE activities to the NJ State Police – this is being offered supposedly to protect us.
There are attorneys, immigrant groups and at least one Democratic Pary 2025 Assermbly candidate (Guy Citron) who are raising questions about the exposure to us – the immigrant and immigrant support victims of the ICE terror crackdown – that it could endanger us to prosecution.
One NJ community organizer who has led anti-war, anti-racism and various other struggles for years has some first hand experience with providing a video to police and ending up being prosecuted accordingly in the liberal ‘progressive town’ of South Orange. Ms. Davis took to Facebook to explain her reticence over the Sherrill video announcement:
Well gee! I have some actual, LIVED experience with turning over video to the “state.” (Needless to say, it was a TREMENDOUS error on my part). But the WHOLE damned state came after me. South Orange, the municipal prosecutor Gracia Montilus, Judge Jonathan Rosenbluth, and the STATE OF NJ. I was at a weekly, pro Palestine protest that was held by SOMA, 3/31/24, when a zionist came aggressively running at as, screaming and yelling. I live streamed it, told the beast officers that to let them know there was video of it. One of the beast officers asked to see it, I acquiesced, and the STATE came after me with false charges and NO EVIDENCE! This case is still going on.
Also, considering that in NJ beast officers are allowed to kill unarmed Black pp with impunity, we KNOW they will not protect us, or help us. IN FACT, THERE HAVE BEEN ABOUT 5 UNARMED BLACK PP EITHER MURDERED OR SHOT BY POLICE IN NJ SINCE 8/2025, AND THE AG HASN’T EVEN RELEASED THE NAMES OF THE OFFICERS YET! In Lisa Davis’s case, in 2024 she was at a cease fire rally in South Orange – typical of the rallies / vigils held there and in Maplewood on a weekly basis to end the US – Israel genocide in Gaza. She was a participant, not an organizer and not a speaker. She got there late and was not involved in leading chants or otherwise leading the rally.
The event as it started to break up was accosted by an emotionally charged Israel supporter who repeatedly charged physically toward the protesters while ranting semi coherently . Ms. Davis played a protective role and asserted that he should stay out of her face. The police who answered calls asked Ms. Davis for video from her phone on the incident which Ms. Davis provided. Two days later she was charged with false accusations based upon false witness by two police officers. They falsely accused her of leading the protest and chants and she did not even get there until a half hour after the protest started – total fabrication. The details are in article linked below.
But it is clear – it does not make sense to randomly submit evidence to police on this matter or any matter including to this portal. Minimally anyone doing so should seek advice of a criminal defense attorney and if you are an immigrant – from an immigrant attorney. Not just advice – your attorneys should review the video and if they tell you no you should not submit please heed their direction. Most good attorneys will tell you NO unless they extremely vetted the video.
And as Guy Citron points out – rest assured by submittting to Sherrill’s portal you are submitting it to Trump’s DOJ. Trump’s DOJ and the FBI will use the mechanisms of National Security Presidential Memorandum-7 – to demand the video evidence and use it to make cases against us or just to come kill us in the streets like Rene Good, Kevin Porter and Alex Pretti!
