Movimiento COSECHA NJ Embraces Statement Calling for Congressional Candidate Nellie Pou to Denounce AIPAC

Movimiento Cosecha is a national non-violent movement fighting for permanent protection, dignity, and respect for all undocumented immigrants. The NJ chapter has recognized the inability to make progress in these regards while the US is participating in and supporting Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people. COSECHA NJ has leveraged its organizing capacity to try to secure a ceasefire proposal in Elizabeth, NJ. The group also supports pro-Palestine protests by participating in mobilizations. Through its RADIO COSECHA media outlet, it has amplified the voices of NJ’s protest movement challenging US support for the genocide.

Movimiento COSECHA NJ has embraced a recent statement of Latinos calling upon Nellie Pou, who has been celebrated by the Democratic Party of NJ as ‘the first NJ Latino woman candidate for US Congress,’ to renounce her ties to AIPAC.

According to the statement:

“We Latinos Supporting Palestinians in NJ are responding to the accolades celebrating Nellie Pou as the first Latino Woman Congressional candidate in NJ. However the legacy of this accomplishment is soiled by your support for Israel and your acceptance of financing of your campaign from AIPAC and related pro-Israel sources. Latino struggle can not be moved forward over the graves of the slaughtered Palestinian people.”

The statement calls “upon you Nellie Pou to renounce and turn back the donations from the AIPAC and other pro-Israel lobby groups and to renounce your stated support for Israel.”

The full statement is reported here. Individuals and organization reps can read the statement and use the input form under the statement at this link to sign on to the statement.

Movimiento COSECHA NJ, supporting the call upon Pou to renounce AIPAC, elaborated further:

“We ask Nellie Pou to represent all New Jerseyans, to condemn the death of civilians at the hands of Israeli Forces and to demand security for New Jersey residents who have family or who visit Palestine. Many undocumented workers share an ancestral memory of genocide and at Movimiento Cosecha, we find it is our deepest duty to fight alongside the oppressed, silenced and under current colonization. As a movement fighting for dignity, respect and permanent protection for everyone, regardless of legal status – we will continue to call for an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire. We are proud to be undocumented, unafraid and unapologetically in support of Palestine, viva viva Palestina!” – Movimiento COSECHA NJ

Lily Benavides, also a Latino woman candidate running in NJ’s 11th District with the Green Party, was an initiator of the Latino statement challenging Nellie Pou to renounce her AIPAC support and her support of Israel. Benavides offered the following assessment:

“History will remember who tried to steer the Latino community to politically support genocide of our Palestinian compas – Nellie Pou – and those of us who demanded principled political solidarity – in the end we will prevail since that is the only way forward for our own liberation and improvement.”
